FINLAND, KUUSAMO, MARCH 2015 Great Grey Owls

The following images are a photographic record of a trip to Finland in March 2015. Based at Kuusamo and Oulo we saw in addition to the photographed species--Black Grouse , Willow Grouse, Three Toed Woodpecker, Pine Grosbeak and White-tailed Eagle.

This trip was extremely arduous and should not be undertaken unless you are Young(at heart), fit to walk long distances without collapsing, capable of withstanding temperatures of minus fourteen( at times without gloves) and have the ability to operate with very little sleep. In addition the Expert use of Snow Shoes, Nordic Skis and Snowmobiles would be useful.

The Results are always worth overcoming Adversity.

Great Grey Owl.

Certainly the most challenging species we endeavoured to photograph, not only were they difficult to locate but their behaviour with respect to ease of attraction was extremely varied. Battling our way through fields of virgin snow of unknown depth but usually in excess of two feet was often necessary!

To our surprise our Dipper location was also being visited by Marcus Varesvuo, the renowned  Finnish Bird Photorapher!

Capercaillie,Kuusamo, Finland, March 2015.

Surprisingly these heavy birds are often found at the tops of pine trees

We were extremely fortunate to come face to face with this Rogue Capercaillie. The dangerous nature of these Turkey sized game birds were driven home when our specimen charged our Local Guide, Antii; hitting him fully in the chest and sending him flat out onto the snow. Although dazed he recovered to manoeuvre this magnificent species into the above Photographic poses.

Snow shoes were essential to reach the Capercaillie elevation
