FINLAND, KUUSAMO, MARCH 2015 Great Grey Owls

The following images are a photographic record of a trip to Finland in March 2015. Based at Kuusamo and Oulo we saw in addition to the photographed species--Black Grouse , Willow Grouse, Three Toed Woodpecker, Pine Grosbeak and White-tailed Eagle.

This trip was extremely arduous and should not be undertaken unless you are Young(at heart), fit to walk long distances without collapsing, capable of withstanding temperatures of minus fourteen( at times without gloves) and have the ability to operate with very little sleep. In addition the Expert use of Snow Shoes, Nordic Skis and Snowmobiles would be useful.

The Results are always worth overcoming Adversity.

Great Grey Owl.

Certainly the most challenging species we endeavoured to photograph, not only were they difficult to locate but their behaviour with respect to ease of attraction was extremely varied. Battling our way through fields of virgin snow of unknown depth but usually in excess of two feet was often necessary!
